It also features a six-speed gearbox with individual ignition mapping for each gear, which results in a smooth gear shift and excellent acceleration. The bike has a lightweight frame with a new Y-shaped reinforcement collar and a 4.5mm thicker engine mount that provides excellent stability and optimum cornering performance even at high speeds.

- In March 2021, the bike was launched with a new LCD screen, 12-volt charging socket, a 5.4-litre fuel tank, telescopic front fork, rear monoshock, hydraulic disc brakes, smart key system, plus many more.
- In April 2022, the Yamaha Y16ZR World GP 60th Anniversary edition was launched in Malaysia with only 5,000 units available.
- In 2023, the bike received three new colors for the Malaysian market: Glacier White, Phantom Neon & Flaming Silver.
- Yamaha Y16ZR Doxou ‘Tech Art’ edition was launched in Malaysia by Hong Leong Yamaha Motor in May 2023. It is a limited edition model with only 5,000 units available. The bike comes with a unique color option that combines blue and purple color options and all-blue rims.
